The Current State of the Anthracite Market in South Africa – Q4 2025

The fourth quarter of 2025 is not looking very positive for South African producers.

The domestic demand for anthracite with low phosphorous and sulphur has basically disappeared. Except for two furnaces running at Samancor, no other ferrochrome furnace is currently running in South Africa.

In our 14 years of being active in anthracite supply in South Africa we have never such a situation before.

Anthracite exports are also very low with only two main destinations currently being served, namely Oman and Brazil, with prices being under a lot of pressure.

We expect the market to come under further pressure as more supply from Peru and Russia competes with traditional anthracite consumers globally.

We do not expect pricing to improve in the short term despite increases in coking coal pricing.

We do expect that more than half of South African anthracite producers will go into care and maintenance until market conditions improve.
