Anthracite Trade – The Global Shift

Looking back at history the production of anthracite there has been many shifts of key production centres.

A 120 years ago the US produced over a 100 million tonnes of anthracite per annum. Europe too mined its own coal and anthracite in Germany, The UK, Spain and probably other countries we are not aware of.

South Africa became a player in the global trade of anthracite from the 1970’s and exported millions of tonnes to global markets.

Ukraine also emerged as a key producer and supplier to global markets with its good quality and location to supply into Europe and the middle east.

After the collapse of the soviet union Russia started entering the global market and quietly started introducing their product all over the world. The Russian material was known for its low ash, volatiles and sulphur which allowed it to be used in many application to supplement the use of Met Coke.

7 years ago Peru was a small player in the industry with many people dismissing producers as being artisanal and illegal but presently Peruvian production is over 2 million tonnes and the potential to increase this is vast.

China and Kyrgyzstan have also slowly emerged as a supplier into global markets as they traditionally served their own industries.

Who will be the next big producer and player of anthracite globally?

Russia with its vast resources and high quality will forever have a great impact on the industry. Smaller producing countries will serve their closest domestic industries. Ultimately the lowest cost and best quality producers with favourable geopolitical advantages will thrive.
