South Africa has a rich history of ferroalloy production. It was based on the country’s vast resources of chrome, manganese and vanadium.
When the industry was developing, electricity supply was about the cheapest in the world. With supply of coke from then Iscor and other reductants domestically, it allowed producers to make alloys on a large scale, economically and profitably. This created a enormous industry that created many jobs and downstream industries.
China has developed a highly advanced and productive ferrochrome industry despite having zero chrome ore reserves. They are mainly supplied by countries such as India, Kazakhstan, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
They also have access to low-cost and stable electricity produced by China’s coal-fired power stations
We believe that the South African government must take the following measures to assist the domestic industry:
Allow industry to producer their own power to supply their own needs; and apply duties on chrome ore exports. These two changes will allow South Africa again to become a powerhouse of ferrochrome supply and create numerous jobs and wealth for the country.
